The Difference Between Motion and Freedom
One of the unexpected things about writing a series is discovering that each character arrives with a question.
Not a plot question.
A life question.
Something they need to understand before they can move forward.
As I’ve been writing the Crystal Sisters, I’ve realized that each sister has been searching for something different.
❤️ Ruby came home to unfinished love.
💚 Emerald went searching for answers.
🤍 Opal followed wonder and possibility.
And then there’s Amber.
Amber has spent much of her life moving. New places. New experiences. New roads to explore.
For years, she believed freedom could be found just beyond the next horizon.
And honestly? I think many of us understand that feeling. Not necessarily the desire to travel, but the belief that happiness is waiting somewhere else.
After this project. After the next move. After the next goal. After one more change.
But what if freedom isn’t always found in leaving?
What if sometimes it can be found in staying?
That question became the heart of Amber’s Journey.
As I wrote her story, I found myself thinking about all the ways we convince ourselves that movement and progress are the same thing.
Sometimes they are. Sometimes they’re not. Sometimes we’re running toward something. Sometimes we’re running from something.
And sometimes we don’t know which until we stop long enough to ask ourselves.
I think that’s one reason I fell in love with Amber.
She’s adventurous. Curious. Warm-hearted.
The kind of person who collects stories everywhere she goes.
But beneath all of that is a woman trying to figure out where she truly belongs.
And perhaps whether belonging has less to do with geography than we think.
Without giving too much away, Amber meets someone who understands that restlessness better than most.
Someone who has spent years moving from place to place himself.
Together they begin asking a question neither of them expected:
What if the place you’ve been searching for isn’t a place at all... but a person—and a life worth staying for?
As a writer, I don’t always know the lesson a story is trying to teach me when I begin.
Sometimes I don’t discover it until the very last page.
Amber’s story reminded me that there is a difference between motion and freedom.
And sometimes the bravest thing we can do isn’t setting out on a new journey.
Sometimes it’s choosing to stay.
